Carlos Alcaraz has won the men’s US Open title, following a four sets win over his rival, Jannik Sinner.

The Spaniard produced an extremely impressive display, beating Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1,6-4 in close to two- and three-quarter hours.

The win sees the 22-year-old claim his second title at Flushing Meadows, after winning his first in 2022, whilst also collecting his sixth grand slam title, which ties him with legends Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg.

With the Spaniard winning again on the Arthur Ashe Arena, he rises past the Italian to World Number 1, after Sinner held the spot for 65 consecutive weeks – the fourth longest reign in history.

However, the Italian’s time at top spot is, for now, at an end, with Alcaraz returning to the peak of the tennis mountain for the first time since September 2023.

In terms of the match itself, there was little Sinner could do to match the flair and firepower of the 22-year-old champion, with Alcaraz’s serve being a forever constant force against the Italian, whilst producing a mix of fabulous forehands and brilliant touch at the net.

There was a period when Sinner was on top, producing a strong second set, but it wasn’t sustained, with the Spaniard finding the form from the first set that was putting him so far clear of his main rival on the day.

The trend continued in the third and fourth sets, as the Sinner serve was broken more times during his clash with Alcaraz than throughout the whole rest of the tournament combined.

On the other hand, the now two-time US Open champion only dropped one set throughout the whole tournament, that being the second against Sinner, as the 22-year-old was able to beat the likes of Rinderknech, Lehecka and Djokovic all in three straight sets – these last two weeks really were pure domination from Alcaraz.

When speaking about his great rival after the match, Alcaraz said: “I’m seeing you more than my family. It’s great to share the court, share the locker rooms, to share the everything with you. Watching you improve everyday and working really hard with your team and really great people around you.”

The Spaniard is right in terms of how much the pair are meeting, with every grand slam final since the US Open 2023 being won by one of the two, with the last three finals all being Alcaraz-Sinner finals.

When speaking about the future the US Open champion added: “I think I’m at the best version of my career so far, but not yet at 100%.

“At 22-years-old, it’s difficult to already be at your maximum level. Little by little I’ll keep improving to try and get there.

“The best of Carlos hasn’t come out yet.”

Now Alcaraz’s attention will most likely turn towards the end of year trophy of being crowned World Number 1 at the ATP Finals in Turin, though he will have to fend off a hungry Sinner, who will be itching to get back the spot he lost in America last night.

Quote of the week

“The consistency of my level during the whole tournament has been really high, which I’m really proud of.

“The three weeks I spent here are a privilege.”
