Anfield Stadium main stand Liverpool

Another Premier League weekend passed by and with that came many interesting results, including a certain northern club looking closer to their best.

We start with the 3 o’clock matches which were very strong this weekend, with the five of the top seven teams playing at this time. Arsenal faced a tough trip to the Molineux Stadium, where they did nearly trip up. See what I did there. An extremely controversial red card for Miles Lewis-Skelly just before half time could’ve rocked The Gunners, however a second yellow card for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes equaled the sides’ numbers. From there Arsenal took control and a well taken finish from Ricardo Calafiori was enough for Arteta’s side to take the three points back to London.

Eddie Howe’s Jordie boys were able to pick themselves up after the tough 4-1 defeat they suffered at St James to Bournemouth last weekend. A 1-3 victory was enough with Alexander Isak getting back on the scoring, with a brace at Saint Mary’s.

Liverpool continued their impressive form with a comfortable 4 -1 win over struggling Ipswich. Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Mo Salah and two from in-form Cody Gakpo helped The Reds maintain their gap at the top of the table. Jacob Greaves got a 90th minute consolation goal to wipe out the clean sheet, sorry any Liverpool defenders owners on Fantasy.

Everton secured more points under new manager David Moyes with a 0-1 against Brighton. Illiman Ndiaye’s penalty was enough to get The Toffees all three points on the South Coast even with Brighton’s domination of possession and chances. Still feels like Dyche ball to me. Evertonians, what are we thinking?

The final 3 o’clock kick off was a guaranteed cracker, we just didn’t think it would turn out like this. Bournemouth played Nottingham Forest at The Vitality Stadium with two of the most in-form teams in the league going at it for places in Europe next season. Well there was only one in-form team playing today and that was certainly The Cherries, a 5 – 0 win with a hattrick

from Dango Ouattara to seal a historic win for the club. Next, they play Liverpool at home, oh wow what a match and again not on TV. Thanks Premier League.

It was a long trip up to Manchester and the Etihad Stadium for the Chelsea faithful and that support was not rewarded but it should have been. Chelsea went 1-0 up in the third minute with a mistake from new signing Abdukodir Khusanov gifting a goal to Noni Madueke. Straight after Chelsea could’ve had a second where Palmer and Jackson had a 2 on 1 which wasn’t seized. From there City grew into the game with other new signing Omar Marmoush scoring, but the flag was up for offside. However just before half Josko Gvardiol got the Citizens level, before goals from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden earned Pep the three points. Are Man City back? Only time will tell, a big game against Club Brugge awaits on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for Ange Postecoglou it was a familiar story. Another loss, this time to relegation threatened Leicester City, who are now only seven points of Spurs. The game went as you would’ve expected, Spurs scored before poor defending let The Foxes back into the match. Jamie Vardy pointed at the Premier League badge before El Khannouss scored the second and at full time Ange started arguing with Spurs fans by the tunnel. 2-1 Leicester in the end. A typical Spurs game these days, what more is there to say? Apart from Ange in or out of course.

Thomas Frank’s men bounced back from the heartbreak of last week’s Liverpool game with a 2-1 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Bryan Mbeumo got on the score sheet and so did German Kevin Schade. Esse got a goal on his Palace debut to reduce the deficit, however it was The Bees who secured all three points in the London derby.

West Ham continue to improve under Graham Potter with a 1-1 draw at Villa Park. An early goal by Jacob Ramsey was cancelled out by an Emerson equaliser for The Hammers, while Morgan Rogers had a goal ruled out. Villa’s biggest concern will be the injury to centre back Tyrome Mings, who left the pitch today. Axel Disasi looks to be the man Emery is hoping his side will be able to get on loan from Chelsea in order to cover the gap that Mings left behind.

The final game of the weekend was a 7 o’clock snooze fest between Fulham and Manchester United at Craven Cottage. Don’t get me wrong, for fans of either team this game would’ve been stressful, however for the neutral it was not one to remember. The same scoreline as the opening day of the season with United winning 1 – 0, this time through a deflected long shot from Lisandro Martinez which dipped over Bernd Leno and into the back of the net. Youngster Toby Collyer cleared the ball off the line in helping United gain the three points in London. Have to feel for the United away end though, with a trek back up to Manchester for Monday morning, just what you want.

Quote of the week

“The consistency of my level during the whole tournament has been really high, which I’m really proud of.

“The three weeks I spent here are a privilege.”
